Farm-to-School programs (from school gardens to our Good Food Club) are available to schools and youth-serving agencies (such as Boys & Girls Club or YMCA programs). Research has consistently shown that eating healthier at a younger age can help prevent the onset of many diet-related diseases. Since most of our eating habits are developed at a young age, Nourish works with local schools to deliver nutrition education so the students have better success in eating healthier as they age. By partnering with area school administrators, teachers and food-service personnel, Nourish Farms aims impact kids’ nutritional knowledge, food choices and eating behaviors – with the end goal of helping them avoid chronic disease in the future.
Good Food Club programs can be held at Nourish, at the school or a youth-serving site, and can address cooking, gardening, and nutrition education. Nourish developed a 3-year “Harvest of the Month” curriculum to use in all youth-based sites we partner with, including Early Childhood Centers. Because if kids enter the school system after four years of eating processed foods containing high sugar and sodium levels, it’s much more difficult to retrain them to accept healthy foods later.
